She escapes with Koko’s help, singing, “He couldn’t take my boop-oop-a-doop”-in this case, her virginity-“away.” “Pay me or be my wife,” the villainous landlord demands, whispering in an aside that “I’ve got her in my power now.” In “ Boop-Oop-a-Doop,” a 1932 short whose name references Betty’s scat catchphrase, circus performer Betty returns to her dressing tent to find her boss waiting to assault her. “ She Wronged Him Right” (1934) opens with a teary-eyed Betty telling her landlord that she can’t pay her mortgage. Men were constantly chasing her down and forcing her into unwanted sexual interactions. Though Betty was aware of her sex appeal and often used it to her advantage, her sexuality also proved to be a liability. She is the only film star who wears fewer clothes than Jean Harlow.” As the Film Daily wrote in 1932, “Mister Fleischer gave her a doll-like face with those baby eyes BUT also a mature figure with oo-la-la curves and a boudoir languor in her walk.” The News-Herald added, “Betty has another claim to fame. But she was first and foremost a sex symbol. She was a circus performer, a racecar driver and a presidential candidate. But Betty Boop takes it for granted that Bimbo and Koko will form a background for her talents in each production.”Īs the star, Betty played a range of roles. “When that happens to most feminine stars they are flattered. “Betty has two leading men in every picture,” noted the News-Herald in 1932. Unlike her contemporary Minnie Mouse, Betty wasn’t a sidekick, but rather the star of her own show. Here, Betty's ice block coffin is carried by dwarfs on skis. "Snow-White" is filled with surreal imagery. “In fact, they were inspirational to the Surrealists.” “The Fleischer Studios had a really experimental and kind of Surrealist style,” says Hendershot. Halfway through the film, jazz legend Cab Calloway (a regular guest in Betty Boop cartoons) performs a spooky musical number, embodied first by Koko and then by a ghost. As Max’s grandson Mark Fleischer recalls, his grandfather’s motto was “If you can do it in real life, why animate?” Fleischer Studio’s seven-minute “Snow-White” short includes such surreal images as the evil queen’s face morphing into eggs in a frying pan a tree stump fighting with Betty’s co-stars, canine beau Bimbo and his friend Koko the Clown and Betty, interred in an ice block coffin, being led down a mountain by the dwarfs on skis. In the Fleischer landscape, anything was possible, and seemingly nothing was off limits. In New York, meanwhile, Fleischer created a grungy, often dangerous urban world for its characters to navigate. From its home in California, Disney was laying the groundwork for the idyllic, fantastical fairy tales that would soon dominate its oeuvre. The dueling studios’ styles were diametrically opposed. After a makeover, Betty became the first fully human, fully female animated character.Īt its height in the 1930s, Fleischer Studios was a giant in animation, rivaled only by Disney. She appeared in the Fleischers’ “ Talkartoons” series as the girlfriend of main character Bimbo and was such a success that the studio promoted her to its star. Initially, Betty was depicted as a dog with a button nose and floppy ears. Her constantly shifting design offers an intriguing case study of how representations of women-including fictional ones-are shaped by censorship, the public’s response and changing conceptions of morality. Betty’s appearance continues to evolve today, with the character donning ripped jeans, joggers and sneakers, and overalls in merchandise and on social media. Beneath that iconic look, however, is a more complex story of aesthetic transformation, from what Heather Hendershot, a media historian at MIT, describes as a “flapper-secretary-adventurer” in the early 1930s to a “middle-class homemaker” by the end of the decade. The enduring image of Betty is a flapper in a strapless minidress, with a garter peeking out above her knee and large hoop earrings in her ears. … They would come for the Betty Boop cartoon.” “She’s a big hit,” says Katia Perea, a cartoon scholar at City University New York, “and she’s a big hit in the same way that Felix the Cat is a big hit, where she was drawing audiences to the movie. At a time when cartoons were largely opening acts before a featured movie, Betty’s stardom was an outlier. With that said, to enter into the tournament, all you need to do is queue up in a Ranked Constructed lobby and play matches as normal. During this event, players worldwide do battle in the Arena where they compete for glory and prizes (packs and GODS tokens).ĭue to the game constantly being updated and improved, the format for the weekend ranked league tends to go through a variety of iterations. In short, there is a weekly ranked event that runs every Friday 5 am PDT/4am PST – Monday 5 am PDT/4am PST. Weekend Rankedīefore we show you the ropes on how to play the game, you need to know how “Ranks” works. It was built by the same team behind Gods Unchained and gives players access to zero gas fees, instant trades and scalability, apps, and marketplaces, all of which vastly enrich the user experience and make the game more enjoyable. There is a maximum number of 500 million GODS tokens.įor those of you wondering what Immutable X is, it is the world’s first layer two for NFTs built on Ethereum. Of course, the more tokens you possess, the more influence you will have. It’s like becoming a shareholder in the game that grants you access to a seat at the board. The GODS token also represents voting power within the Gods Unchained ecosystem, which means that holders of the token can participate in governance proposals that influence the future developments of the game. It is an ERC20 token that you can use to craft NFTs (cards), purchase packs from the Gods Unchained Marketplace, or earn more rewards by staking your tokens in Immutable X. The GODS token is the native currency that is used within the game. When you earn cards (NFTs) in Gods Unchained, you can either add them to your collection to play with, or you can sell them for the native in-game currency, the GODS token. These are the most common form of NFT at the time of writing, and can easily be held in any compatible Ethereum wallet, and sold on most marketplaces/exchanges. Gods Unchained is built upon the Ethereum network, which means that all of the cards and in-game items that players acquire come in the form of ERC-721 tokens (NFTs). In other words, players now have an unprecedented degree of power and influence over their assets (and the gameplay). In addition to this, the immutable nature of NFTs and the blockchain means that not even the Gods Unchained developers are able to adjust the value of cards or take them away from players. It accomplishes this by allowing players to mint cards and other assets on the Ethereum network as non-fungible tokens (NFTs), which provide players with true, provable ownership over their items. Gods Unchained intends to stir things up by granting players complete control over in-game assets. Surprisingly, global gaming audiences spent $54 billion on additional in-game content in 2020, but the vast majority have nothing to show for their spending outside of the gated environments in which these games exist. At the base level, Gods Unchained may seem like a simple game, but it gets extremely complex the deeper you dive into the strategy and the synergy between cards and decks. In its essence, the game works like this players buy, build, and collect cards that they can use to construct decks to battle against other players. What is Gods Unchained Image source: Gods.Unchainedĭeveloped in 2018 by brothers James and Robbie Ferguson (who are both self-proclaimed crypto fanatics), Gods Unchained is an online trading card strategy game that is in many ways similar to fan favorites such as Hearthstone and Magic The Gathering Arena. If you’re looking to get involved but don’t know where to begin, this guide will bring you everything you need to know about the massively popular game, including the ways you can make money, and how the gameplay works. One of the most popular games that adopts the play-to-earn model is Gods Unchained, which has over 80,000 actively weekly players (as of January 2022). So, how does this work? Well, rather than having your in-game items stuck inside walled gardens that stop you freely moving your assets in and out of the game, NFT technology allows players to take the items they have earned, won, or discovered onto the secondary marketplace where they can sell them to other players (or investors). Now, for the first time ever, players of all ability levels can earn an income playing games as they are rewarded in the form of rare NFTs and digital currency. Blockchain gaming is one of the most exciting new advancements to come out of the industry in quite some time. Maggie sobbed after putting down the nail polish, realizing her mother had died. I t also serves as a stark contrast to Meredith’s reaction to her mother’s death. How deeply affected the people she left behind were was what made losing Diane Pierce (LaTanya Richardson Jackson) so sad. Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) was a wreck after her adoptive mother died, as many people would be. It was only through flashbacks in episodes to come that the audience fully came to appreciate her as the formidable surgeon and intense woman she was. So when she coded after struggling with Alzheimer’s in Season 3, there may have been few dry eyes in the house. Let’s be honest, Ellis (Kate Burton) wasn’t the best mother. When she finally did visit, the two carried on a somewhat terse conversation before he ultimately died in his sleep. Meredith ( Ellen Pompeo) and Thatcher (Jeff Perry) had a rocky relationship as father and daughter, but as she warmed up to her sister Lexie (Chyler Leigh), she grew to care for her father as well - which made his death somber, as Meredith put off seeing him. Something is "happening".Ī few good examples from REAL projects I worked on before: def get_orders(): □ Functions and Methods should be verbsįunctions and methods represent an action or actionable stuff. It gets less hard when you define some guidelines. □ Naming classes, functions, and variables They give you a strong sense of knowing what might exist inside. You can at any moment break it down into smaller modules if required. The beauty about having plural modules is that: I can understand that I might have one or many exception classes inside exceptions and so on. It seems very natural to import classes and functions like: from gmaps_crawler.storages import get_storageįrom gmaps_crawler.exceptions import CantEmitPlace This is the current project tree outlining exceptions to the #3 rule: gmaps_crawler This project is responsible for crawling data from Google Maps using Selenium and outputting it ( Read more here if curious). I'll share a Google Maps Crawler project that I built as an example. Use your judgment, if in doubt stick to the plural rule. There're exceptions to this rule though! Modules can be named core, main.py, and similar to represent a single thing. Java and C#).Īs a rule of thumb, name your modules in the plural and name them after a business context. Often, people think it’s a bad practice due to some experience with other languages that enforce the other way around (e.g. Only break it down when your module gets too big, or when it handles different concerns. (when classes are related to the module, obviously.) It’s fine to have several classes within a single module, and you should do so. It can have virtually all of them or just a bunch of some. I mean namespace because you can't say for sure whether they have many functions, classes, or just constants. If you're inside a directory that contains any _init_.py it's a directory composed of modules, not files. □️ How to name filesįirst of all, in Python there are no such things as "files" and I noticed this is the main source of confusion for beginners. We're going to discuss how to solve this soon in this chapter. We need to set up the project to be installed under this repository. The only drawback of doing it is that you can't import module_a in your python code out of the box. The main reason behind the src dir is to keep active project code concentrated inside a single directory while settings, CI/CD setup, and project metadata can reside outside of it. It's boring to have things so apart due to the alphabetical sorting of the IDE. This is quite annoying because of the lack of order, producing things like (example): non_recommended_project Some variations include no src dir with all project modules around the tree. I've seen many projects doing differently. If in doubt, consider what people would pip install and how you would like to import module.įrequently it has the same name as the top project. I recommend you to keep all your module files inside a src dir, and all tests living side by side with it: Let's focus first on directory structure, file naming, and module organization. This is not necessarily bad if you know what you're doing.ĭuring this chapter, I'm going to present to you guidelines that worked for me over the past working in different companies and with many different people. Many decisions that are easy to implement may backfire producing code that is extremely hard to maintain. Do you need to modify a function behavior? Why not a decorator!?.Do you need to read an os environment var? Just read it right there.Do you want to keep all project classes in a single main.py file? Yes, it works. So far Python is one of the most flexible languages I had contact with and everything too flexible enhances the odds of bad decisions. Python is different from languages like C# or Java where they enforce you to have classes named after the file they live in. □ Python For every minute spent in organizing, an hour is earned. The scene's lasting impact can be seen in its numerous parodies and homages in popular culture. As a result, the bear suit scene perfectly exemplified the themes and stylistic choices of the film, which blended horror and psychological thriller elements with a surreal and dreamlike atmosphere. The Shining was released in the era of postmodernism, a time when traditional narrative structures and conventions were being challenged and subverted in art and culture. The scene became so popular due to its unexpected and surreal nature, as well as the intense performance by Nicholson. In the scene, Danny Torrance is running away from his father, Jack Torrance (played by Jack Nicholson), and as he takes a hard turn through the Overlook Hotel's many corridors Danny comes face to face with a man wearing a bear suit on his knees in front of one of the Overlook's many apparitions. The famously paused bear suit scene in The Shining, a horror film directed by Stanley Kubrick and released in 1980, has become one of the most iconic and memorable moments in cinematic history in spite of its brevity. From the memorable music and sound design to Monroe's captivating performance, every detail of the scene has been carefully crafted to create a sense of sensual and playful fun. The film's portrayal of Monroe as a seductive and desirable woman was a perfect reflection of her real-life persona, and helped to further fuel her already considerable fame and popularity.įor home audiences, pausing the dress scene in The Seven Year Itch is a must in order to fully appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship that went into creating it. At the time of the film's release, Monroe was at the height of her fame and had just divorced her second husband, baseball legend Joe DiMaggio. Released in 1955, The Seven Year Itch was a major success at the box office, and helped to cement Monroe's status as a Hollywood superstar. The scene is both sexy and playful, and Monroe's performance is nothing short of iconic. In the scene, Marilyn Monroe's character, a sultry and irresistible woman simply known as "The Girl" stands on a grate in a white dress as the air from the subway blows it up, revealing her legs and panties. The dress scene in The Seven Year Itch is one of the most famously paused scenes in cinema history, and it's not hard to see why. Overall, the corkscrew car jump scene in The Man With The Golden Gun is a testament to the ingenuity and bravery of stunt performers, and it's one of the most memorable and impressive car stunts in film history. The fact that this stunt was performed for real makes it all the more impressive, and it's no wonder that audiences would want to pause the scene to fully appreciate the level of skill and bravery involved. It required incredible precision and skill from the stunt driver, as well as a specially designed car and ramp. This stunt is particularly impressive because it was performed for real, with no special effects or computer-generated imagery involved. The car performs a series of acrobatic flips through the air before finally landing on the other side, much to the amazement of the audience. Bond then has to cross a topsy-turvy bridge in order to continue following Scaramanga. In the scene, James Bond chases his nemesis Scaramanga, played by Christopher Lee, in an AMC Hornet before losing him. The corkscrew car jump scene in The Man With The Golden Gun is certainly one of the most impressive and insane car stunts in film history. Apparently no one realized that the cardboard cutout of Danson wearing a top hat actually appears again during the film in a more prominent position. The idea of a ghost appearing in a comedy film was certainly unexpected and shocked many viewers, adding an extra layer of intrigue to an already entertaining film. The film was released in the late 1980s, a time when the supernatural and paranormal were becoming increasingly popular themes in popular culture. This scene caused quite a stir among audiences at the time, with many people believing that the cardboard cutout was actually a ghost. As they rush around the room, a cardboard cutout of a character can be seen in the background, seemingly standing on its own. Did you catch this strange and shocking moment in the most popular film of 1987? The uber-paused scene in the film Three Men and a Baby (1987) occurs during a pivotal moment in the plot when the characters played by Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg, and Ted Danson are frantically trying to get the baby to sleep. Unlike starting pitching skills, batting silver skills actually do seem to work relatively well as thirds. They don't necessarily have to be another one of the top batting skills. The third skill in your set can prove to be quite important if you want to remain competitive. Getting to at least 100 SPD with the train + set deck should be your priority if you want to use these sets. I will also assert that in my experience, in-game stat boosts do not help with getting to the supposed `100 SPD threshold (I've had BC + Leg Day push my 92 SPD guy to 108 in game, only for him to hit. You're likely sacrificing way too many points from EYE to get to that stat threshold. If you're pouring 30+ points to get SPD up though, maybe consider one of the other sets mentioned above. As long as you can keep the overall stats relatively reasonable, BIU with any of the other three skills is right up there with Charisma/SI. Primes and Vintages can have this problem too.īut that doesn't mean that should stop you from trying. Most normal cards, especially DHs, cannot achieve 100 SPD without compromising the train and completely sacrificing either POW or EYE. The issue that many players face is how many of their best cards can never get to 100 SPD even if they pour 20+ points into the train + ST. Probably the most controversial opinion here, but BIU is a terrible skill. C, but sometimes Sīarrel It Up 8 + Charisma/Spotlight/Slugger Instinct Surprisingly low average and HR numbers compared to the other sets above, even with comparable hitting stats. Bīatting Machine 8/Spotlight 7 (interchangeable with which skill to 8 here) They have places in the lineup depending on what your team needs. SI/SL is a monster HR hitting set until you see how many PAs your player has and how low the average has fallen. Char/BM looks great in all categories except HRs, which can cause RBI numbers to fall flat. It's a game changer and makes this set almost reach the levels of Charisma/Slugger. I used to be a lot less excited about this set until I got Charisma 8 to pair with Spotlight. Half my lineup has it and I wouldn't trade it for anything else (other than BBH/Pioneer.). Hits HRs, hits XBHs, and has a decent average + OBP. Not much else to say about it other than it is Mr. Many of my trains will look to maximize EYE, with EYE 1 in over half of my trains. I find CON to be pretty much worthless as skills determine batting average much more than the stat value behind the card. My focus on batters is to keep POW and EYE as high as possible. I am aware that better skill sets exist, but I am offering the combinations of two skills that will remain strong even when facing those scary 120+ OVR teams. No, I didn't get there all F2P, but my team was still pretty decent in the ~800-1000 range before I spent money.Īnother note is that these sets are the most realistic batting sets for F2P and low budget players. I figured I would share my perspective on skills since my team has recently become much more competitive on the Ranked ladder despite not having a single team signature card on the batting side (and only 2 team sigs total). I was thinking about this topic because the PSCT packages dropped again, and thinking about the rates of actually hitting a good batting Legend skill is depressing. But not all our teams can utilize these skills effectively, or in the case of the Legend skills, even roll them! So by now we've seen batting skill guides raving about Legend skills (Pioneer/Bad Ball Hitter), Barrel It Up, Spotlight.
